Assisted Independent Living

Assisted Independent Living is about finding strategies that help you to continue living the life you want in the face of declining abilities. To date, most of these have been homemade DIY life-hacks or very focused high-tech product solutions. FABhome expands the category further with a comprehensively designed housing option that takes the possibility of Assisted Independent Living to a new level. We work with municipalities, community non-profits, developers, and care facility operators to create high-quality, community-embedded housing projects for adults to continue to live independently with targeted levels of physical and cognitive support.

1 in 3 older Canadians, representing 2 million people, are in danger of being prematurely institutionalized.

Most homes aren’t designed for people as they age. As our abilities decline, it becomes difficult, and even dangerous, to live in a typical house. Even simple issues related to mobility, reach, or mild confusion can lead to a premature move to an assisted living facility with higher levels of support than you need, an elevated risk of infection from communal living, and the look and feel of a hospital.

The resulting loss of independence, personal control, and separation from an individual’s community of choice that comes from having to live in a care facility before it’s medically necessary negatively impacts their quality of life and ability to age well. It also unnecessarily increases the burden on an already over-stressed health care system.

FABhome offers a comprehensive solution to this problem that blends the freedom and autonomy you want with the individualized supports you need.

Using built-in support features that help you to age at home makes intuitive sense. The challenge is how to do it well but without your home looking like a hospital. This is hard to achieve when most of the technology aids available for home use, such as stainless-steel handrails in the bathroom, were originally designed for care institutions. That’s why our architectural team reimagined aging at home from the ground up. This includes designing the support features in our homes to be as transparently unobtrusive to you, and your guests, as the lenses in your eyeglasses.

FABhome offers a comprehensive solution to this problem that blends the freedom and autonomy you want with the individualized supports you need.
